The ratings told a similar story. The show had been an absolute phenomenon through the mid-to-late 1980s, the number one series in America for five consecutive seasons, essentially rescuing NBC from its early-decade doldrums. But by season seven and eight, the audience had thinned. Not collapsed, but thinned enough that Cosby clearly understood the difference between leaving well and overstaying.
