What is Dharma & Greg about?

Dharma & Greg is built on the simplest possible premise: a free-spirited woman from a counterculture family marries a buttoned-up lawyer from the establishment on their first meeting, and they have to figure it out. It's fish-out-of-water comedy at its most straightforward, the kind of show that justifies its own existence by asking what happens when two people with nothing in common try to make a marriage work. If you want a sitcom that doesn't overcomplicate things, that trusts the basic tension between its two leads, this delivers exactly that for five seasons.

What makes it work is Jenna Elfman's performance. She moves through scenes with real physical comedy and warmth, playing Dharma as genuinely eccentric without making her a caricature. Thomas Gibson holds the other side of the equation, playing Greg's exasperation as something earned rather than automatic. The show doesn't push you to choose a side, which gives both characters room to breathe. The supporting cast, especially Alan Rachins and Susan Sullivan as Greg's parents, know how to puncture a scene with timing. Dharma's parents round out the cultural clash in ways that sometimes work and sometimes feel like they're just waiting for the next joke.

The show was successful enough to run five seasons and drew enough critical attention to earn Elfman a Golden Globe in 1999, along with eight nominations for the show itself. It was exactly the kind of mainstream network comedy audiences showed up for in the late 1990s, solid and dependable without being remarkable. Critics treated it as competent, which is roughly how it has aged. It is not profound television, and it does not try to be. Audiences watch it now the way they watched it then: as a comfortable half-hour that does not demand anything but your attention.

What keeps it from becoming something more is that the premise, once established, does not evolve much.
