What is Cheers about?

Cheers ran for eleven seasons on NBC, from 1982 to 1993, and the fact that it still holds up is less about nostalgia than about how genuinely well it was made. The premise is almost defiantly simple: a bar in Boston, a recovering alcoholic ex-pitcher behind the counter, a rotating group of regulars on the stools. That's it. The show trusted that if the characters were rich enough, you didn't need much else.

The tone is warm without being soft. Sam Malone is charming and a little shallow, which Ted Danson plays with more self-awareness than the character probably deserves. The early seasons are built around the push-and-pull between Sam and Diane, but the show found a second life when Kirstie Alley came in as Rebecca Howe, bringing a different kind of comic energy, more brittle and self-undermining. Norm and Cliff are the kind of barfly double act that could have been background furniture but ended up being genuinely funny on their own terms. The writing never condescends to the people in that bar, which is rarer than it sounds for a network sitcom.

Critics loved it from nearly the beginning, and audiences eventually caught up. It won 28 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series four times, and is regularly cited as one of the best American sitcoms ever made. The finale drew over 80 million viewers, which tells you something about how much people had invested in these characters over more than a decade.

What sets Cheers apart from the many workplace comedies it influenced is that the workplace is also a refuge. These people are not just colleagues. They are, for better or worse, each other's whole social world, and the show is honest about how sad and how funny that actually is.

By the early 1990s the show had won a staggering number of Emmy Awards and remained one of the most watched programs on American television. But the creative team, led by producers James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles, had always been careful stewards of the show's quality, and there's a reasonable argument that they saw the writing on the wall before the audience did. The cast had already changed significantly over the years, most notably with Shelley Long's departure in 1987 and Ted Danson's growing profile as a film actor. Keeping a show like that vital across more than a decade requires constant reinvention, and at some point the original vision had been stretched about as far as it could go.

The finale in May 1993 drew an enormous audience, around 80 million viewers, which tells you everything about how the show was regarded at the time. It went out on its own terms, celebrated rather than mourned. That's a rare thing in television, and it happened here because the people involved knew when to stop.
