Better Off Ted is a workplace comedy about Ted Crisp, a middle manager at Veridian Dynamics, a corporation so aggressively amoral it makes a cartoon villain look principled. The show works because it never pretends the evil is subtle or requires interpretation. Veridian doesn't hide its schemes behind corporate jargon; the company openly tests experimental technology on employees, tries to fire people by making their jobs impossible, and invents things like a machine that makes you irresistible to the opposite sex for reasons no one at the company can articulate. Ted wants to do well at his job and provide for his daughter. He also wants to maintain some basic human decency. These two goals are fundamentally incompatible, which is where the comedy lives.

The show's secret weapon is Portia De Rossi as Veronica Palmer, Ted's boss. She's beautiful, competent, and completely without a moral compass, and De Rossi plays her with such genuine warmth that you almost forget she's describing plans to harvest organs or eliminate middle management. The dynamic between them gives the show its emotional core. Ted isn't trying to win over a cartoon villain; he's trying to impress someone he actually respects and maybe even loves, which makes his slow realization that the company is heinous considerably more painful.

Critics and viewers who found it understood what made it special. The show landed an 8.2 on IMDb from a substantial voting base, which is respectable for a workplace comedy that didn't catch on nationally. ABC, however, seemed confused by it.
