What is Superstore about?

Superstore is set inside Cloud 9, a fictional big-box retailer somewhere in Missouri, and it earns its premise by taking the store seriously as a place where real people spend their working lives. Justin Spitzer, a Superstore veteran, builds the comedy around the gap between corporate cheerfulness and the actual experience of stocking shelves, managing difficult customers, and surviving on wages that don't quite cover rent. That tension gives the show something to say, which separates it from workplace comedies that coast on quirky ensemble dynamics alone.

The tone is warm without being soft. Glenn, the store manager played by Mark McKinney, is hopelessly naive in ways that should be irritating but land as genuinely sweet. Dina, Lauren Ash's assistant manager, is rigid and self-serious in ways the show mines for years without the joke going stale. The series is at its best when it uses a retail setting to get at something specific about American working-class life: unionization, immigration status, health insurance, the pandemic. That last one the show addressed in real time, a season-six gamble that worked better than it had any right to.

Critics liked it steadily if not ecstatically. It never broke through to the awards-season conversation the way The Office did, which it inevitably gets compared to given the single-camera workplace format and the central will-they-won't-they between Ben Feldman's Jonah and America Ferrera's Amy. But Superstore is less interested in documenting office neurosis than in sketching out what it looks like when work is physically exhausting and the company doesn't particularly care whether you're okay.

Ferrera left before the final season, and the show felt her absence. The ensemble is strong enough that it kept going, but some of the weight came out of it. Nico Santos's Mateo, whose undocumented status becomes a running storyline with real stakes, is probably the most specific and surprising character the show produced, and his arc is worth the price of admission on its own.
