There's a competence to the execution here. The cast is solid, particularly Sam Neill lending authority to his role, and the mystery-of-the-week structure gave the show room to explore different criminal psychologies and time periods. What it lacks is momentum. The show moves cautiously, clearly hoping to build to revelations that might not have ever come.

Viewers and critics found it pleasant but slight. The central mystery wasn't interesting enough to anchor a full season of investigation, and the show didn't quite know whether to commit to serialized plotting or episodic monster-hunting. The core problem was almost certainly the audience it lost between episode one and the finale. Mystery dramas live or die on whether viewers believe the creators have a plan worth following, and Alcatraz never convinced enough people that the puzzle would pay off.
