What is White Collar about?

Neal Caffrey is the kind of television character who makes you want to dress better. Matt Bomer plays him as effortlessly stylish, quicksilver smart, and perpetually up to something, and the show around him is shrewd enough to know that watching someone charming run a con is simply enjoyable in a way that does not require much justification.

The setup is classic odd-couple procedural: convicted forger and art thief Neal gets out of prison by agreeing to consult for the FBI, specifically for the agent who caught him, the methodical and decent Peter Burke, played by Tim DeKay. What keeps White Collar from being merely formulaic is the texture of that partnership. Burke is not a straight-man foil to be outwitted every week. He is perceptive, occasionally weary, and the show treats his domesticity, his marriage to Elizabeth (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen), as something worth caring about. The show never fully commits to being dark, but it is not shallow either. Willie Garson's Mozzie, Neal's paranoid, wine-enthusiast best friend, is responsible for a good portion of its genuine wit.

USA Network in the late 2000s had a whole stable of shows like this, breezy procedurals with a quirky-genius protagonist, and White Collar slotted neatly into that lineup alongside Burn Notice and Psych. Critics acknowledged it as well-crafted comfort television without losing their heads over it, and audiences responded warmly, giving it a loyal following across six seasons. An 8.2 on IMDb from over 150,000 votes suggests a fanbase that remained attached long after the show ended.

The mythology episodes, when the show pivots from case-of-the-week to longer arcs about stolen Nazi treasure or Neal's murky past, are sometimes more ambitious than they are satisfying.
