Rami Malek built a career on stillness, and Mr. Robot is essentially a four-season experiment in what you can do with an actor who barely moves. He plays Elliot Alderson, a paranoid, morphine-addicted hacker who narrates directly to an imagined friend, meaning the audience, and who slowly reveals himself to be a far less reliable guide than he first appears. The show's central trick is that Elliot's mental illness is not just a character detail but a structural device, one that creator Sam Esmail uses to genuinely destabilize what you think you're watching.

The tone is relentlessly bleak and occasionally beautiful. Esmail shoots the show with a fixed, off-center framing style that puts characters in the corners of the screen and leaves empty space where you'd normally expect faces. It's unsettling in a way that feels purposeful rather than decorative. The hacking is unusually accurate by television standards, which gave the show credibility with technical audiences, and the corporate villain at the center, a conglomerate called E Corp that Elliot and his fellow hackers want to destroy, landed with particular force in a post-2008 moment of real public anger at financial institutions.

Critics loved the first season, which arrived to a level of enthusiasm that USA Network, better known for lighter procedurals, had never quite seen. The second season divided people sharply when Esmail doubled down on unreliable narration to a degree some found brave and others found frustrating. By the fourth season, which most agreed was a return to form, the show had settled into a smaller but fiercely loyal audience that appreciated what it was trying to do even when it stumbled.

Christian Slater's Mr. Robot, the figure who may or may not be real, is the show's most enjoyably ambiguous creation. Slater brings a loose menace to the role that Malek's locked-down performance needs as a counterweight, and their scenes together are where the show feels most alive.
