The Resident arrived in 2018 with something genuinely unusual for a medical drama: a willingness to treat hospitals as institutions that can harm you. The show's early seasons were almost adversarial toward the healthcare industry, depicting insurance red tape, corrupt administrators, and pharmaceutical greed as real obstacles to patient care. Matt Czuchry's Conrad Hawkins is the kind of doctor who knows how the system cheats people and refuses to pretend otherwise. That makes him a more interesting protagonist than the usual genius-with-a-heart-of-gold.

Critics found it uneven but respected that it tried to say something. The show was never prestige television and never pretended to be. It wanted to be watchable and a little angry, which is a reasonable ambition.

What keeps it from being as sharp as it wants to be is the gradual softening that sets in around season three. The systemic critique gets quieter, the cases get more exotic, and Conrad starts feeling less like a provocateur and more like a standard leading man. The early seasons are worth your time.
