What is The Nanny about?

Fran Drescher created this show essentially as a vehicle for herself, and the confidence of that decision never wavers across six seasons. She plays Fran Fine, a loud, Queens-bred cosmetics saleswoman who ends up as nanny to three children belonging to a widowed British Broadway producer named Maxwell Sheffield. The premise is a classic fish-out-of-water setup, but the show leans so hard into its star's specific personality, fashion sense, and that voice that it becomes something harder to imitate than the format suggests.

The tone is broad, cheerful farce with a heavy debt to classic screwball comedy. The will-they-won't-they tension between Fran and Mr. Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy, playing straight man with real charm) drives the series, and the supporting cast carries more of the comedy than such shows usually allow. Daniel Davis as the sardonic butler Niles and Lauren Lane as the perpetually sidelined C.C. Babcock have a running antagonism that is genuinely funny in its own right, not just background noise. Renée Taylor as Fran's overbearing mother Sylvia shows up frequently enough to feel like a sixth main character.

Audiences liked it considerably more than critics did. Critics tended to find it shrill and formulaic, which it is, but formulaic execution at this pitch and consistency has its own appeal. The show ran for six seasons on CBS and built a devoted following that has kept it alive in syndication and streaming long after its network run ended.

What holds up most is the cast's comfort with each other. By the later seasons Drescher and Shaughnessy play off each other with the ease of a long-running stage double act, and the jokes land faster because of it.

Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson, who were married in real life at the time and had created the show together, had shaped the entire series around that courtship arc. With the couple now wed and a pregnancy storyline wrapping things up in the finale, there was a natural stopping point. It was their show to end, and they ended it.

Six seasons and 144 episodes is a genuinely solid run for a CBS sitcom, and The Nanny went out on its own terms rather than being pushed. By the late 1990s the ratings had softened from the show's earlier peak, but this wasn't a cancellation driven by crisis. It was closer to a creator deciding the story was told.
