Julian Fellowes has made a career out of chronicling the unwritten rules that bind social hierarchies together, and The Gilded Age finds him in his element. The show follows Marian Brook, a young woman newly arrived in New York from the South, as she navigates the rigid expectations of her aunts' world while drawn toward the Russell family, new money climbers determined to break into old-money society. What could have been a simple fish-out-of-water story instead becomes a careful examination of who gets to decide what counts as acceptable and what happens when that decision gets challenged. Marian's friendship with Peggy Scott, an African-American woman passing as a servant, adds a layer that prevents the show from treating its world as merely ornamental. These are stakes that matter, even in a world obsessed with calling cards and dinner seating arrangements.

The pleasure of watching The Gilded Age is mostly the pleasure of watching people navigate constraint. Fellowes is fascinated by the mechanics of how society actually works, the small moments where someone understands a glance or fails to, where a lie holds up or collapses. The dialogue can feel mannered in a way that works against genuine surprise, and the show sometimes treats its historical setting with the reverence of a museum display. But Carrie Coon as Bertha Russell almost single-handedly justifies the premise. She plays a woman determined to belong to a world that has decided she never will, and Coon brings such focused intelligence to her schemes and humiliations that entire episodes sharpen around her.

The show arrived to solid critical reception but never became the phenomenon Fellowes found with Downton Abbey. Audiences have responded warmly enough to keep it running, and the cast ensemble remains one of television's stronger collections of reliable actors. The Gilded Age trades in the same period-drama currency as shows like Victoria or Bridgerton, though it cares more about institutions than romance and more about how power actually moves than about costumes. Four seasons in, it has settled into the work of showing how structures hold people in place, and how exhausting it is to maintain them.
