What is The Flash about?

The 1990 Flash was television's first real attempt to treat a superhero as something other than camp or an afterschool special. Instead, John Wesley Shipp brought genuine vulnerability to the role, a man suddenly burdened with extraordinary speed and no clear sense of how to use it. The show built around him wasn't trying to outsmart viewers with irony or lean heavily into comic book aesthetics. It wanted to ask what it would actually feel like to move through the world faster than anyone else.

What made the show distinctive was its willingness to treat superpowers as a real problem rather than pure wish fulfillment. Barry's speed created friction with his relationships and his work as a police chemist. The tone was tense and dramatic, closer to an early Batman film than to anything campy. The science was half-baked by design, but the emotional stakes felt solid. Amanda Pays brought real chemistry as Tina McGee, his fellow scientist and love interest, and the crime-solving felt procedural enough to anchor the superhero elements to something resembling reality.

The show arrived at an awkward moment. CBS didn't quite know what to do with a superhero drama that wasn't a cartoon. Audiences seemed divided too. It earned respectable reviews and the cast was committed, but the network ultimately saw no future in a single-season run. In retrospect, it's better than its cancellation might suggest, though it was clearly still finding its footing. Some episodes drag, and the special effects budget showed its limitations even in 1990. Still, Shipp's performance held the whole thing together.

It predates everything that made superhero television viable later by years.
