What is Succession about?

Succession is a show about terrible people with too much money arguing over who gets to be the most terrible person with the most money. That description sounds reductive, and it is, but it is also basically accurate, and the miracle of Jesse Armstrong's writing is that you spend 39 episodes genuinely invested in which of these awful human beings comes out on top.

The tone is the trickiest thing to explain to someone who hasn't seen it. It is listed as a drama with comedy elements, but that undersells how funny it actually is, and how the humor works. The Roy children, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv, are deeply damaged adults who use wit and cruelty interchangeably, often in the same sentence. Nicholas Braun's Greg and Matthew Macfadyen's Tom provide something closer to conventional comic relief, though the show eventually reveals that Tom is far more calculating than he first appears. Brian Cox plays Logan Roy as a man who built an empire by breaking everyone around him, and Cox makes him frightening and occasionally, against your better judgment, pitiable. Jeremy Strong, playing Kendall's operatic self-destruction, became a critical fixation unto himself, and the performance earns the attention.

The reception was slow to build and then enormous. The first season drew modest audiences, but by season two the show had become prestige television's primary topic of conversation, a position it held through its finale in 2023. Critics were near-unanimous in their enthusiasm, and the awards attention was substantial. The finale generated real disagreement, the kind where people argued in good faith about what the ending meant rather than just whether it was satisfying, which is a reasonably good sign that the show had done something worth arguing about.

Where Succession sits in the landscape of HBO dramas is interesting mostly because it does not look like its obvious predecessors. It has the dynastic scope of something like Dallas filtered through a very specifically contemporary anxiety about media power and inherited wealth. The show's greatest formal achievement might be how it manages to hold satire and genuine tragedy at the same time without the two modes undermining each other. Roman's final scene makes that tension as plain as the show ever does, and it is very hard to shake.

Succession ended because its creator, Jesse Armstrong, decided it should. That's the simplest and most accurate way to put it. Armstrong had been candid that the show always had a finite story to tell, and by the fourth season it had told it. The Roy family's war over Waystar Royco reached a conclusion, however bleak and unsatisfying for the characters involved, and Armstrong clearly had no interest in spinning the wheels past that point just because the show remained popular.

And it was genuinely popular. The final season drew some of the strongest ratings HBO had seen in years for a drama, and the critical reception never really dipped across all four seasons. This was not a show that ran out of road because audiences walked away or because HBO lost faith in it. If anything, the network would almost certainly have welcomed more. But HBO's relationship with prestige creators tends to give those creators meaningful control over the shape and ending of their work, and Armstrong used that control to close the story on his own terms.

There is something worth noting in how rare that actually is. Most shows of this caliber either get cancelled before they finish or get extended well past their natural stopping point. Succession did neither. Thirty-nine episodes, four seasons, and a clean exit while the show was still at its peak. Armstrong looked at what the story had become, decided the question of who would inherit Logan Roy's empire had been answered, and stopped.
