What is Sex and the City about?

Carrie Bradshaw writes a weekly sex column for a New York newspaper and somehow affords a Manhattan apartment overflowing with Manolo Blahniks. That particular fantasy is one of many the show asks you to accept, and for six seasons most viewers were more than happy to go along with it. At its core, Sex and the City is about four women navigating love, work, and each other, and the conversations they have over brunch are frequently funnier and sharper than anything else on television was doing with female friendship at the time.

The tone is a specific, confident mix of romantic comedy and frank sexual honesty that felt genuinely new in 1998. HBO gave Darren Star and the writers room to discuss sex in ways network television simply would not, and the show used that freedom well, particularly in the early seasons. Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall with tremendous comic energy, got to have the kind of guilt-free erotic life usually reserved for male characters. Miranda, in Cynthia Nixon's hands, carried most of the show's actual cynicism and earned it. Charlotte and Carrie are more uneven, and the show's habit of centering Carrie's often maddening romantic choices could test patience.

Critics were enthusiastic, and awards followed, including multiple Emmy and Golden Globe wins for Sarah Jessica Parker. Audiences responded enormously, and the show built a cultural footprint that outlasted its run by decades. Some of that legacy has curdled on rewatch, particularly around race, the treatment of bisexuality, and the show's narrowly wealthy vision of womanhood. Those criticisms are fair and the show does not fully escape them.

What it retains, though, is the quality of its best ensemble scenes, specifically the four women together, unfiltered, at a table. When those scenes work, which is often enough, the rest of the contrivances stop mattering quite so much.

Sex and the City ended on its own terms, which was relatively rare for a show that successful. By the time the sixth season wrapped in early 2004, the series had run for six years and 94 episodes, and creator Darren Star, along with the cast and producers, felt the story had reached a natural conclusion. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha had been through enough relationship cycles that continuing further risked repetition rather than growth.

There was also the simple reality of holding a cast like that together. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis were all in demand, and the economics of keeping four leads on an HBO prestige drama grow complicated over time. HBO was not cancelling a show that remained one of its signature properties, a genuine cultural phenomenon that had redefined how television talked about women and sex. But the show's producers recognized that ending at a high point, with Carrie landing in Paris and finding her way back to New York, was a cleaner exit than running the premise into the ground.

It's worth noting that the story did not really end in 2004, of course. Two theatrical films followed, and then the HBO Max continuation And Just Like That picked things up nearly two decades later. That appetite for more says something about how the audience felt about the ending: satisfied enough, but not quite ready to let go.
