What is Sex and the City about?

Sex and the City arrived on HBO in 1998 and did something American television had largely avoided: it put four women at the center of their own adult lives and let them talk about sex with the same frankness that male characters had always enjoyed on screen. The show follows Carrie Bradshaw, a Manhattan columnist, and her three closest friends navigating dating, relationships, and the specific social pressures of being single women in their late thirties in New York. It is also, unavoidably, a show about shoes and cosmos and a kind of aspirational city life that bears little resemblance to what most people can afford.

The tone sits somewhere between romantic comedy and something sharper. At its best, the writing is witty and the four leads have a chemistry that makes the friendships feel more real than the romances. Kim Cattrall's Samantha is the character who aged best, mostly because she was allowed the least sentimentality. The show struggles when it leans into Carrie's romantic angst, which it does often and at length, and the Big storyline can feel like it is being dragged toward an ending the audience was promised rather than one the character earned.

Critics in the late 1990s and early 2000s praised it heavily, and it collected Emmy and Golden Globe wins. Its cultural footprint was enormous, and it genuinely changed the conversation about what female-led television could look like commercially. Audience reception has softened somewhat in retrospect, particularly as viewers have grown less patient with Carrie as a narrator, whose self-involvement was perhaps more charming in 1998 than it reads now.

What holds up is the specificity of New York in that particular era, and the sense that these four women actually like each other. The friendships are the show's real subject, even when the writing pretends otherwise.

Sex and the City ended on its own terms, which was relatively rare for a show that successful. By the time the sixth season wrapped in early 2004, the series had run for six years and 94 episodes, and creator Darren Star, along with the cast and producers, felt the story had reached a natural conclusion. Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha had been through enough relationship cycles that continuing further risked repetition rather than growth.

There was also the simple reality of holding a cast like that together. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis were all in demand, and the economics of keeping four leads on an HBO prestige drama grow complicated over time. HBO was not cancelling a show that remained one of its signature properties, a genuine cultural phenomenon that had redefined how television talked about women and sex. But the show's producers recognized that ending at a high point, with Carrie landing in Paris and finding her way back to New York, was a cleaner exit than running the premise into the ground.

It's worth noting that the story did not really end in 2004, of course. Two theatrical films followed, and then the HBO Max continuation And Just Like That picked things up nearly two decades later. That appetite for more says something about how the audience felt about the ending: satisfied enough, but not quite ready to let go.
