What is Emily in Paris about?

Emily in Paris is a show that knows exactly what it is and has no interest in apologizing for it. Lily Collins plays Emily Cooper, a cheerful American marketing executive who moves to Paris, stumbles through cultural misunderstandings, wears extraordinary outfits, falls for unavailable men, and somehow lands every client pitch despite speaking almost no French. Created by Darren Star, the man behind Sex and the City and Younger, it runs on the same basic fuel: aspirational settings, romantic complications, and a protagonist whose professional competence is matched only by her personal chaos.

The tone is unabashedly frothy. Paris here is a postcard version of itself, all croissants and cobblestones and beautiful people behaving dramatically. The show has been criticized, pretty fairly, for its shallow treatment of French culture and its tendency to recycle the same love triangle with new accents. But it also has a supporting cast worth watching. Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie, Emily's sardonic boss, brings a sharpness that the show otherwise lacks, and Ashley Park as Mindy provides warmth that feels earned. These two characters are often more interesting than Emily herself.

Critics were not kind, particularly in the early seasons, flagging the thin plotting and the show's cheerful disregard for plausibility. Audiences responded very differently. Netflix viewership numbers were enormous, and the show became a genuine cultural talking point around fashion and travel. That gap between critical reception and audience enthusiasm is itself telling: this is comfort television, designed to be watched in an afternoon with no particular emotional demands placed on the viewer.

Over six seasons the storylines have stretched, and the romantic permutations have grown a little exhausting. But the show remains visually consistent and reliably easy to watch, which is not nothing. Its greatest trick is that Sylvie's world, the Parisian fashion and media industry full of people who find Emily baffling and slightly embarrassing, is consistently more fun than Emily's own story.
