Joseph Gilgun steals nearly every scene he appears in as Cassidy, managing to make a violent addict both despicable and unexpectedly sympathetic. The show's real weakness is its plotting, which grows increasingly convoluted as it chases its premise toward a conclusion that the story doesn't quite earn.

Critics generally respected what the show attempted, though reactions soured as the seasons progressed and the narrative became more scattered.
