What is Once Upon a Time about?

Once Upon a Time arrived on ABC in 2011 with a genuinely clever hook: fairy tale characters, stripped of their memories, living mundane lives in a small Maine town called Storybrooke. The show was created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, both Lost veterans, and that background shows. There is the same appetite for mythology, the same fondness for flashbacks, and unfortunately some of the same habit of building mysteries that prove more satisfying to set up than to pay off.

What made the early seasons work was the casting, particularly Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin and Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen. Both actors committed fully to material that could easily have tipped into camp, and Parrilla in particular became the emotional center the show didn't know it needed. The tone is family-friendly but not toothless, mixing genuine darkness from the source myths with sentimental redemption arcs. It is very much an ABC primetime drama in its bones, which means it rarely gets as strange as its premise might invite.

Audiences responded strongly in the early going, and critics were cautiously warm, praising the ambition while noting the show's tendency to pile on new characters and plotlines until the mythology became difficult to track. By the middle seasons, that tendency had become a real problem, with the writers cycling through villain after villain and realm after realm in ways that diluted the original ensemble rather than enriching it.

The seventh season was essentially a soft reboot, moving to a new city with a largely new cast, keeping only Parrilla, Carlyle, and O'Donoghue from the original lineup. It is a strange artifact, more spinoff than continuation, and viewer numbers dropped sharply. The show is best understood as something that had a genuinely good first two seasons and then spent five more chasing that feeling.

Once Upon a Time wrapped up after seven seasons in 2018, and the ending was less a network decision than a natural consequence of the show running out of road. The original premise, fairy-tale characters trapped in a Maine town with no memory of their true identities, had a built-in expiration date. By the time the central curse was broken and Emma Swan's story concluded at the end of season six, the show had essentially told the story it set out to tell.

Season seven was a significant retool rather than a true continuation. Most of the original cast departed, and the show relaunched around a grown-up Henry Mills in a new city with a new curse. It was a gamble that largely did not pay off with audiences. Ratings had been declining for several years, and the revamped season failed to arrest that slide or attract new viewers in any meaningful numbers. ABC gave it a chance to find a new footing, but the audience erosion made a further renewal increasingly difficult to justify.

The show ultimately ended on its own terms in the sense that season seven was allowed to conclude with a finale rather than being cut mid-story. But the writing was on the wall. A fantasy procedural that had been one of ABC's signature hits in 2011 had simply aged out of cultural relevance by 2018, and neither the network nor the reduced creative team had a convincing argument for an eighth season.
