Moon Knight works best when it leans into genuine weirdness. Oscar Isaac carries the entire series through sheer commitment to the fractured psychology of Marc Spector and Steven Grant, two distinct personalities sharing one body. When Steven emerges, he's genuinely funny in his befuddlement, speaking in an exaggerated British accent and attempting to make sense of blackout periods and a mercenary life he can't quite remember. When Marc surfaces, the show becomes something harder and more violent. Isaac sells the switches without theatrical excess. The real draw here is watching him navigate this impossible internal conflict while everyone around him stays mostly clueless.

The show treats mental illness as the central mystery rather than a plot device, which is rare for Marvel projects. The tone swings between introspective character study and violent action, and these shifts don't always land smoothly. Some episodes lean too heavily into mystical mumbo-jumbo involving Egyptian gods and ancient curses when the show is most interesting when it stays grounded in Marc and Steven's deteriorating grip on reality. Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow, a charismatic cult leader who believes he's serving a higher power, makes a strong antagonist because he's not wrong about the supernatural elements at play, just ruthless about them.

Critics found the series uneven but appreciated Isaac's performance and the willingness to get weird with the material. Audiences responded warmly enough to secure a second season greenlight, though some viewers felt the pacing dragged in the middle episodes and the final answers about what's real felt less satisfying than the questions that built up to them. The show sits apart from other Marvel entries because it prioritizes character instability over plot coherence, which feels intentional.
