What is Moon Knight about?

Oscar Isaac carries almost the entire weight of this show, and for the most part he is up to the task. Moon Knight follows Steven Grant, a London gift-shop worker with a nervous relationship with time and memory, who gradually discovers he shares a body with an American mercenary named Marc Spector. The two identities are bound to Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon, and the series unfolds as part psychological thriller, part mythology-heavy action show, with a middle section set in psychiatric limbo that is either the boldest swing the MCU has taken in years or a test of your patience, depending on how generous you are feeling.

The tone is noticeably darker than most Disney+ Marvel output, and the Egyptian mythology gives the visuals and mythology something the other shows have lacked: a genuinely foreign texture. Ethan Hawke plays the villain Arthur Harrow as a soft-spoken cult leader with a reasonable-sounding worldview, and his scenes with Isaac are the best the show has to offer. The problem is the series is only six episodes long, which forces it to compress what should be a slow-burn identity crisis into something more rushed than the premise deserves.

Critical response was warm rather than rapturous. Audiences appreciated Isaac's commitment and the show's willingness to treat dissociative identity disorder with some seriousness, though the final episodes leaned back toward conventional MCU action in ways that felt like a retreat. The IMDb score of 7.3 reflects something close to the truth: a good show with a great performance at its center, one that does more interesting things in its first two episodes than most Marvel series manage across an entire run.

What lingers is Isaac's physical performance, the way he differentiates Steven's pigeon-toed shuffling from Marc's coiled stillness with almost no costume help at all. That kind of work usually gets better material written around it.

Moon Knight wrapped after six episodes because Disney+ and Marvel Studios designed it that way from the start. The show was conceived as a limited series, not an open-ended drama waiting for renewal. That structure suited the material: Oscar Isaac's performance as Marc Spector and his fractured psyche needed room to breathe but not endless serialization. The story of a man grappling with dissociative identity disorder and his relationship to a vengeful god found a natural conclusion when the character's arc reached its endpoint in May 2022.

The show's respectable 7.3 IMDb rating and solid viewership gave it no reason to vanish, but Marvel's streaming strategy has always mixed limited series with ongoing ones. Moon Knight was never pitched as the beginning of a franchise on Disney+. Instead, it served as a contained character study that introduced Isaac's Marc Spector to the MCU proper, leaving the door open for his appearance in future films or shows without committing to a second season. This approach let the creators tell exactly the story they wanted without padding or compromise.
