Critically, it landed well. An 8.6 on IMDb from over 600,000 votes is not a number you argue with easily, and the early seasons generated the kind of cultural conversation Star Wars hadn't seen since the original films. "Baby Yoda," as the internet named the character officially called Grogu, became the rare piece of IP that felt like an actual surprise.

What's honest to say is that The Mandalorian is better in memory than in rewatching, particularly the later episodes. The first season holds up. The climax of season two produced a moment so precisely engineered to hit Star Wars fans in a specific sentimental spot that it worked on almost everyone who saw it, regardless of whether they wanted it to.

The third season, while still drawing solid viewership, received a more mixed critical reception than the first two, with many feeling the storytelling had grown diffuse. The show had also expanded its universe considerably, spinning off "The Book of Boba Fett" and "Ahsoka," which created some narrative fragmentation.

Whether the theatrical move proves wise is genuinely unclear.
