The setup sounds like a recipe for cheap dysfunction jokes, and early on there are plenty of those.

What the show becomes, though, is more interesting. Recovery is treated as the actual subject, not just a character quirk. The Alcoholics Anonymous meetings these women attend are recurring settings where the writing takes addiction seriously, including relapse, loss, and the grinding difficulty of staying sober when your life keeps generating new reasons to drink. The comedy is real but it sits alongside storylines about overdose deaths, abusive relationships, and financial ruin in a way that CBS comedies almost never attempt. Allison Janney, as Bonnie, is the engine here. She takes a character who could easily be a punching bag and makes her specific, funny, and occasionally devastating.

The show lost Anna Faris, who played Christy, before the final season, and the creative team's decision to write her out rather than recast remains controversial among fans. The remaining cast, including Jaime Pressly and Kristen Johnston, carried the final episodes reasonably well, but the absence of the central relationship between Bonnie and Christy left the show feeling like it was running on fumes. Audience ratings were solid throughout, and critics generally praised the more dramatic episodes while acknowledging that the multicamera format occasionally flattened what the material deserved.

At 170 episodes, it had comfortably passed the threshold for syndication, which is often the quiet signal that a show has done everything a network could reasonably ask of it.

The more immediate reason the show ended when it did was Anna Faris's departure after season seven. She played Christy, the central character around whom the whole premise was built, and when she left the show had to reinvent itself around Allison Janney's Bonnie. The eighth season did that reasonably well, but there was a sense that the story had been fundamentally reshaped rather than naturally continued. Running a season without your lead and then wrapping up makes more sense as a conclusion than as a long-term plan.
