Jay Hernandez plays Thomas Magnum here, and the casting is genuinely the best argument for watching. He has enough warmth and physical ease to make the character likable rather than just capable, which matters a great deal in a show that runs nearly a hundred episodes and asks you to keep rooting for someone who solves a new problem every week.

This is a CBS procedural remake that survived CBS, got cancelled, was revived by NBC, and still found a way to run five seasons. The tone is light without being frothy, and the Hawaii setting does actual work rather than serving as pure postcard backdrop. The partnership between Magnum and Higgins, played by Perdita Weeks with a dry wit that sometimes outshines everything else onscreen, gives the show a will-they-won't-they spine that procedural fans have always responded to. The show is comfortable, in the way a warm afternoon is comfortable. That is both its appeal and its ceiling.

Critics treated it as solid if unremarkable, and the IMDb score of 6.3 reflects a modest but loyal audience that appreciated what it was trying to do without mistaking it for something more ambitious. The original Tom Selleck series carries enormous nostalgia, so comparisons were inevitable and not always kind. This version earns its own footing mostly by not pretending the 1980s version no longer exists while quietly updating the emotional register.

What distinguishes it from similar network crime shows, your NCISs and your Hawaii Five-0s, is a lighter touch with the veteran backstory material, which in lesser hands becomes either maudlin or jingoistic. Hernandez keeps Magnum's trauma present without wearing it as a constant costume. The Higgins and Magnum relationship, when it finally moves forward in the later seasons, turns out to be the thing viewers were genuinely watching for, which says something about where this show's real energy always lived.

Magnum P.I. actually has an unusual story for a cancelled show, because it was technically cancelled twice. CBS pulled the plug after four seasons in 2022, only for NBC to pick it up and produce a fifth season. That kind of revival rarely ends well in the long run, and this one was no exception.

The NBC run never really found its footing in terms of ratings. Revivals that jump networks tend to bring a loyal but limited audience with them, and that ceiling is usually too low for a broadcast network to sustain a show indefinitely. NBC gave it a shot, but a 6.3 on IMDb and modest viewership numbers suggest the show was running on goodwill more than genuine momentum. After 96 episodes across five seasons, there simply was not enough of an audience argument to justify renewal again.

There is also something structural working against this kind of show in the current environment. Procedural dramas with standalone cases and light serialization used to be the backbone of broadcast television, but the economics have shifted. Networks are under more pressure to deliver numbers that can compete with streaming alternatives, and a modestly rated action drama with a built-in ceiling is a hard case to make to advertisers. The show had a good run by any reasonable measure, but NBC had no particular reason to keep funding a series that had already been left for dead once before.
