What is Family Ties about?

Family Ties ran for seven seasons on NBC starting in 1982, built around a joke that landed immediately: two former hippies raising a son who worships Ronald Reagan and carries a briefcase to high school. The ideological gap between Steven and Elyse Keaton and their oldest child Alex was the engine of the show, and it worked because the writing let both sides make real points, not just set up the liberal parents as wise correctives to their reactionary kid.

Michael J. Fox was not supposed to be the center of the show. Gary David Goldberg conceived it as a story about the Keaton parents, former 1960s idealists navigating a suddenly conservative America. But Fox's Alex P. Keaton was so sharp and funny that audiences latched onto him immediately, and the show reorganized itself around his performance. Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross were good enough to keep the family dynamic honest, and Justine Bateman's Mallory was a shrewder comic creation than she's usually given credit for, but Fox was operating at a different level.

Critics at the time recognized it as one of the better family sitcoms on television, and audiences agreed, keeping it comfortably in the top ten for much of its run. It holds a modest 7.3 on IMDb, which feels about right. It was warm without being saccharine most of the time, and it earned its occasional dramatic episodes rather than simply announcing them. The addition of toddler Andy in the later seasons was a straightforward attempt to inject new energy, and it worked about as well as these things usually do, which is to say not very.

What holds up is the specificity of the Reagan-era satire and the fact that Alex never quite became a caricature, even when the scripts pushed him in that direction. A kid who believed in supply-side economics as a moral system was a strange comedic premise in 1982, and Fox played it with enough conviction that it never collapsed into pure parody.

More importantly, the cast and creators seem to have recognized when they had told their story. Michael J. Fox had become a movie star through the Back to the Future franchise and was increasingly unavailable, which put strain on keeping the ensemble together. The show had also run through most of its natural character arcs—the Keaton family's dynamics had been thoroughly explored, and there was little new ground left to cover. Rather than let the series limp along in decline, NBC and producers made the sensible choice to end it while the show still had affection from audiences and critics.
