Eastbound & Down rides on a simple, brutal idea: watching a genuinely awful person try and fail to become less awful. Danny McBride plays Kenny Powers, a washed-up baseball player who returns to his North Carolina hometown after flaming out of the majors, landing a job teaching middle school PE. The show finds its humor in Kenny's delusional narcissism and his contempt for nearly everyone around him, but what makes it work beyond the cringe is that it never lets him off the hook.
