What is Dinosaurs about?

Dinosaurs ran on ABC from 1991 to 1994 and did something that sounds absurd on paper: it dressed up a conventional sitcom family in foam latex dinosaur suits and used them to skewer suburban American life with more edge than most live-action comedies of the era dared. The Sinclairs are a working-class family living 60 million years ago but behaving exactly like people in 1991, which is the whole joke, and the show commits to it completely.

The tone is where things get interesting. On the surface it looks like a kids' show, and the Baby Sinclair puppet, voiced by Kevin Clash (who also performed Elmo), became a genuine pop culture moment with his "Not the mama!" catchphrase. But the writers were frequently sneaking in episodes about deforestation, drug addiction, sexual harassment, and corporate greed. Some of those episodes are clumsy, the kind of very-special-episode moralizing that dates badly. Others land with surprising force. The finale, which aired in 1994, is one of the bleakest endings in American family television and is still talked about by people who saw it as children and had no idea what hit them.

Critics at the time were moderately warm without being enthusiastic, treating it as a novelty that punched above its weight occasionally. Audiences were more attached, especially to the Baby, and the show built a loyal following across its four seasons.
