What is Brooklyn Nine-Nine about?

Jake Peralta is a gifted, perpetually adolescent detective who solves cases through instinct and luck while treating the precinct like his personal playground. Then Captain Raymond Holt arrives, and the show finds its engine: a fastidiously formal Black gay man who has spent his career fighting for respect, now supervising a squad of overgrown children. The friction between Holt's rigid dignity and Peralta's chaos is funny on its own, but the show is smart enough to let Holt be right most of the time.

Created by Michael Schur and Daniel Goor, who honed their instincts on The Office and Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine shares DNA with those shows but runs warmer. It is almost aggressively optimistic about its characters, and while that can sand down conflict too quickly, it also means the ensemble feels like a workplace you might actually want to spend time in. Andre Braugher is the best thing here by some distance, playing every joke with absolute deadpan conviction, and his chemistry with Andy Samberg produces some of the show's finest moments precisely because they should not work together at all.

Critics embraced it early and audiences caught up slowly. Fox cancelled it after five seasons, NBC picked it up within 31 hours due to fan outcry, and it ran three more. That arc says something about the show's devoted following, even if the later seasons, particularly the abbreviated final run that tried to grapple with police reform, felt uncertain about what kind of show it wanted to be.

At its best, in seasons two through four, it is one of the tightest ensemble comedies American network television produced in the 2010s. Braugher won two Emmy Awards for the role, and it is hard to argue with either.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's ending was, for the most part, a conscious choice rather than a door slammed shut. The show's history made that decision feel earned. It was famously cancelled by Fox after five seasons in 2018, only to be picked up by NBC within 31 hours after an outcry from fans and cast members. That resurrection bought it three more seasons, but it also meant the show was always living a little on borrowed time at its new home. NBC renewed it out of goodwill and audience loyalty, but a mid-tier comedy in its seventh or eighth season is never a network's top priority, and the ratings, while respectable, were modest.

There was also the shadow of the George Floyd protests and the national reckoning over policing in 2020. The writers have acknowledged that the show, which centered on a police precinct played largely for warmth and laughs, suddenly felt more complicated to make. That cultural shift contributed to the decision to end things deliberately and thoughtfully rather than drag the premise into territory it was never built for. Season 8 was shorter than usual, and the finale felt genuinely valedictory. This was a show that chose its exit.
