Quinta Brunson created Abbott Elementary as a mockumentary set in an underfunded Philadelphia public school, and the show earns its popularity by being both a workplace comedy and something that actually cares about public education. The laughs come from the staff, not the kids, though the kids are always present as the reason any of this matters. Brunson plays Janine, an endlessly optimistic second-grade teacher whose faith in the system is tested constantly and entertainingly. Sheryl Lee Ralph as the veteran Barbara Howard and Lisa Ann Walter as the blunt, neighborhood-connected Melissa give the show its backbone, and Chris Perfetti's anxious, overeducated Jacob provides reliable comic relief. After five seasons, the show's central romantic tension between Janine and Gregory has moved through its natural arc, which is always the test for a workplace comedy built partly on "will they or won't they."
