There's a Gothic creep to it, a sense that scientific progress and Victorian propriety are both hollow masks on something messier. But the six episodes feel truncated, like the show was only beginning to find its rhythm when it stopped.

Critical response was mixed, though not in ways that killed enthusiasm during the initial run. Some critics found the setup promising, the cast committed, and the world intriguingly strange. The cancellation came fast enough that word of mouth never accumulated in The Nevers' favor.
