What is The Last Frontier about?

The Last Frontier takes a high-concept setup and commits to it without apology. A plane carrying prisoners crashes in Alaska, dozens of inmates scatter into the wilderness, and the only law enforcement for hundreds of miles is a weathered marshal named Frank Remnick who has to protect a small town with almost no backup. It's the kind of premise that could sustain a season if the show trusts its premise to matter, and for stretches it does.

What makes the series distinctive is how seriously it treats isolation as a character. Alaska isn't window dressing here. The cold, the darkness, the sheer distance between help and harm shape every decision Frank makes. Jason Clarke brings a worn pragmatism to the role, someone who's already compromised with his own conscience before the crisis begins. The show is darkly toned without being relentless about it, finding moments of real stakes alongside the procedural mechanics of pursuit and survival. Haley Bennett as Sidney Scofield, a woman connected to both the marshal and the escaped inmates, adds moral complexity that occasionally works and occasionally feels forced.

Critics and audiences were cool on the show, and there's a reason beyond its short life: for all its setup, The Last Frontier sometimes plays like a standard crime thriller that happens to be set in Alaska. The escapes blur together. The town dynamics repeat. What should feel like an escalating crisis can feel like a loop instead. That said, the show has committed defenders who appreciated its commitment to bleak atmosphere and character work over plot fireworks.

It lands somewhere between survival drama and police procedural, which is a crowded space. It's more interested in consequence than most shows in that space, but it also can't quite find the distinctive engine that would make it feel necessary. The cancellation after ten episodes suggests Apple TV felt the same way.
