The Eternaut sits apart from other recent apocalyptic shows because it's skeptical of heroism. Salvo isn't trying to save humanity. He's trying to keep three or four people alive in an apartment building while an invisible, shape-shifting threat operates by rules nobody understands. That modest scope, paired with the production's commitment to slow-burn tension, makes it feel less like The Last of Us and more like a locked-room thriller that happens to be set during the end of the world.
