What is Secret Invasion about?

Secret Invasion works best when it stops trying to be a spy thriller and admits it's really about two old men grieving the collapse of their partnership. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury returns to Earth after years in space to find that his oldest ally, the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), has been secretly running an operation on the planet. Mendelsohn gives the more interesting performance, playing a character caught between loyalties, while Jackson spends much of the series looking tired and betrayed, which feels appropriate but limits the emotional range. The show's central hook, that shapeshifting aliens have infiltrated governments and militaries, arrives with real stakes early on, but the six-episode run struggles to sustain either the paranoia or the action.

The biggest problem is tonal whiplash. Secret Invasion wants to be le Carré-style espionage, complete with tradecraft discussions and moral ambiguity, but it also needs to function as a Marvel property with quips, spectacle, and clear heroes. It mostly fails at both. The pacing drags through middle episodes, and supporting characters like Kingsley Ben-Adir's villain Gravik feel underwritten despite being essential to the plot. Olivia Colman shows up as a British intelligence officer and brings welcome wit, but she's a supporting player in her own storyline.

Audiences largely agreed with critics that Secret Invasion felt slight for something carrying so much weight in the MCU timeline. The show landed at a mixed reception, praised for Jackson and Mendelsohn's chemistry but criticized for narrative bloat and a climax that resolves too quickly.
