What is The A-Team about?

George Peppard chews his cigar, says "I love it when a plan comes together," and somehow it never gets old. The A-Team ran for five seasons on NBC and became one of the defining action shows of the 1980s, built around four Vietnam veterans framed for a crime, now hiring themselves out to ordinary people who have no other options. The premise is thin, the villains are forgettable, and nobody ever dies despite an almost continuous hail of gunfire and explosions. What it does instead is deliver the expected with enough energy and humor that you do not mind.

Critics at the time mostly dismissed it as junk food television, which is fair, but audiences made it a massive hit. The IMDb rating of 7.5 from over 40,000 votes suggests it has held up emotionally for people who grew up with it, even if it reads today as a product of a very specific moment in American pop culture, when the action hero was big and loud and the consequences were always optional.

The fifth and final season added Robert Vaughn as a government handler and shifted the premise in ways that fans largely did not welcome. It is worth noting that the show's real identity is entirely contained in those first three seasons. After that it was running on fumes, trying to introduce new dynamics into something that worked precisely because it never changed.

The season was also shortened, which signaled that the network wasn't prepared to give the new direction much of a runway.
