What is Ozark about?

Ozark arrived in 2017 as the show everyone compared to Breaking Bad, and that comparison is both fair and slightly misleading. Like that show, it follows an outwardly ordinary man pulling his family into catastrophic criminality. But where Walter White's story was about ego and transformation, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) is less a man becoming a monster than a man revealing he already was one, and his wife Wendy, played by Laura Linney, ends up being the more frightening figure anyway. The setup is bleak: money laundering for a Mexican cartel, relocated to a lake town in rural Missouri, with Marty improvising schemes to stay alive while the family frays around him.

The tone is cold and grey in a way that is sometimes genuinely atmospheric and sometimes tips into self-seriousness. Bateman directs several episodes and keeps things visually controlled, almost antiseptic, which suits the show's interest in people suppressing panic behind competence. The real emotional heat comes from Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore, a local woman with almost nothing who becomes Marty's reluctant partner. Garner won multiple Emmys for the role and earned every one of them. She is the show's conscience and its most convincing human being.

Critics were warm, audiences were devoted, and the IMDb rating of 8.4 reflects a show that built a genuine following over its four seasons, even as some viewers felt the later seasons were spinning their wheels before the finale. That's a fair criticism. The show has a tendency to keep raising the stakes in ways that eventually feel less like escalation and more like habit, and the Byrdes themselves become harder to care about as their moral compromises accumulate past the point of sympathy.

What stays with you, though, is Linney's performance in the final stretch. Wendy Byrde becomes one of cable drama's more unsettling portraits of a person who has completely reorganized her conscience around survival and winning, and Linney plays it without softening the edges.

The Byrde family's entanglement with a Mexican cartel was never going to sustain itself indefinitely without straining credibility, and the writers shaped the series toward a conclusion rather than milking it for additional seasons. Netflix, which doesn't always grant that kind of latitude, did so here, even allowing the fourth season to be split into two parts, which gave the show room to land properly rather than rushing its ending.

The decision to end at four seasons also reflects how well the show held up commercially and critically. An 8.4 on IMDb is strong, and Ozark consistently drew substantial viewership on Netflix, earning serious awards attention along the way. That standing actually made a clean ending more viable. The show was in good enough shape that ending on its own terms was possible, rather than being dragged into cancellation territory by declining numbers.

There's also a practical storytelling logic here. Marty and Wendy Byrde were always characters built for a pressure cooker, and that kind of sustained tension has a natural ceiling. The writers knew where the story was going, and once they got there, continuing would have meant inventing new crises rather than resolving the ones that gave the show its shape. Ending at 44 episodes across four seasons was the right call, and by most accounts the creative team made that call themselves.
