What is Ozark about?

Marty Byrde is a financial adviser who has been skimming money from a Mexican cartel, gets caught, and talks his way into a second chance by promising to launder half a billion dollars out of a Missouri lake town. That is the setup, and Ozark moves fast to establish that everyone in this family is compromised, everyone is lying to someone, and the beautiful water and trees are just scenery for a sustained exercise in dread.

The show is often compared to Breaking Bad, and the comparison is fair but not flattering in every direction. Where Breaking Bad built its tension around one man's disintegration, Ozark is more interested in a marriage. Jason Bateman plays Marty with a quality that is hard to describe exactly, a kind of frantic calm, the face of a man running enormous calculations behind perfectly normal eyes. Laura Linney as Wendy gets arguably the richer arc: she starts as the wronged spouse and slowly becomes the most dangerous person in the room. Their dynamic gets deeply uncomfortable by the later seasons in ways the show earns.

Julia Garner's Ruth Langmore is the performance most people remember, and for good reason. She is a local woman from a criminal family who becomes central to the Byrdes' operation, and Garner plays her with a specific fury that never tips into caricature. Critics noticed. The show collected Emmy nominations consistently, and Garner won three times for the role.

Ozark is not without its problems. The plotting in the final stretch grows convoluted, and the show develops a habit of resolving impossible situations through convenient turns that start to feel mechanical. The last season, split into two parts, runs long. But the series finale takes a genuine unnerving swing, and whether you think it lands or not, it is not the tidy bow most prestige dramas tie on their way out.

Ozark ended because its creators, primarily showrunner Chris Mundy alongside Jason Bateman, always conceived of it as a finite story. The Byrde family's entanglement with a Mexican cartel was never going to sustain itself indefinitely without straining credibility, and the writers shaped the series toward a conclusion rather than milking it for additional seasons. Netflix, which doesn't always grant that kind of latitude, did so here, even allowing the fourth season to be split into two parts, which gave the show room to land properly rather than rushing its ending.

The decision to end at four seasons also reflects how well the show held up commercially and critically. An 8.4 on IMDb is strong, and Ozark consistently drew substantial viewership on Netflix, earning serious awards attention along the way. That standing actually made a clean ending more viable. The show was in good enough shape that ending on its own terms was possible, rather than being dragged into cancellation territory by declining numbers.

There's also a practical storytelling logic here. Marty and Wendy Byrde were always characters built for a pressure cooker, and that kind of sustained tension has a natural ceiling. The writers knew where the story was going, and once they got there, continuing would have meant inventing new crises rather than resolving the ones that gave the show its shape. Ending at 44 episodes across four seasons was the right call, and by most accounts the creative team made that call themselves.
