The gang factions, the Aryans and Muslims and Italians and Latinos, are drawn with enough specificity that the political maneuvering between them carries genuine tension. Eamonn Walker as the Muslim leader Kareem Said brings a moral seriousness the show needs, and Lee Tergesen's slow transformation of the once-ordinary Tobias Beecher into something harder and stranger is one of the more unsettling character arcs the decade produced.

Critics recognized it as a breakthrough, and the 8.7 on IMDb reflects a devoted audience that found it formative. It is not easy viewing. The show escalates relentlessly, and by the later seasons the body count and melodrama occasionally tip into self-parody. Some storylines strain credulity in ways that feel less like bold choices and more like the writers running out of road.

What stays with you, though, is how seriously it took the idea that prison warps everyone inside it, guards included. The warden played by Ernie Hudson is not a cartoon. Tim McManus, the idealistic unit manager, keeps bumping against his own limitations. Oz understood institutional rot before that phrase became common currency, and it made the point not through speeches but through what happens to people over time in a place like this.
