The tone is unflinching and often brutal, but the writing is sharp enough that even scenes of quiet conversation carry dread.

The show received strong critical praise and developed a devoted audience, though it never became a mainstream phenomenon. Viewers tend to speak of it with admiration mixed with exhaustion, the way people talk about books that change their thinking but don't make them happy.
