What is Miami Vice about?

Sonny Crockett in his linen suit, no socks, driving a Ferrari past neon-lit waterways while Phil Collins plays on the soundtrack. Miami Vice is that image, and the image is not an accident. The show arrived in 1984 as a conscious attempt to make television look like a movie, and executive producer Michael Mann's influence is visible in every frame. It is a cop show about undercover detectives working the Miami drug trade, but the actual mechanics of police work are almost beside the point. The real subject is atmosphere.

Don Johnson carries the show with a looseness that could tip into parody but mostly does not. His Crockett is melancholy underneath the cool exterior, a man whose undercover life has eaten into his real one. Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs is the sharper, more contained partner, and the two have an easy chemistry that keeps the procedural elements from feeling like homework. Edward James Olmos, as their commanding officer Castillo, barely speaks, and somehow steals every scene he is in.

The show was a phenomenon when it aired, credited with reshaping fashion, music licensing in television, and the look of action drama for years afterward. Critics responded to its visual ambition and its willingness to let episodes go dark and strange. Later seasons lost some of the original crispness as the formula settled in, and the guest-star parade of pop musicians became a crutch the show leaned on too heavily.

What separates Miami Vice from the crime dramas that followed in its wake is that it took the surface seriously as content, not decoration. The pastel colors and pop soundtrack were not meant to be ironic. The show believed in its own aesthetic, which is a rarer quality in television than it sounds, and that belief is what keeps it watchable even when the plots are thin.

But by the late 1980s, that aesthetic had become so widely imitated and parodied that the show started to look like a copy of itself. What had been fresh was now familiar, and audiences moved on accordingly. Ratings that had been strong in the early seasons eroded steadily as the decade wound down.

The show also struggled creatively in its later years. The producers made increasingly dark and experimental choices, which alienated some of the audience that had tuned in for stylish action and kept others from finding it in the first place. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas were never going to anchor the series indefinitely, and the sense that the show had peaked was hard to shake by season four or five. NBC had fewer reasons to fight for it when the numbers no longer justified the effort.

By the time the fifth and final season aired in 1988 and 1989, the end felt less like a sudden cancellation and more like a natural conclusion to something that had already said what it had to say. Five seasons and 110 episodes is a respectable run for any drama, and Miami Vice left on its own terms, even if those terms were partly dictated by declining audience interest. It remains a genuinely influential piece of 1980s television, for better or worse.
