Taylor Sheridan has built something of a television empire at this point, and Lioness fits squarely into his mode of operation: morally complicated people doing morally complicated work in service of a country that may or may not deserve their sacrifice. The show follows Cruz, a Marine recruited into a CIA program that embeds women as deep-cover operatives inside terrorist networks, and Joe, the station chief who runs the program with the kind of exhausted authority that suggests she has seen this go wrong before. Zoe Saldaña plays Joe, and she is the real reason to watch. She brings a weight to the role that the scripts do not always earn, holding scenes together through sheer precision of feeling.

The tone is Sheridan's usual blend of procedural tension and domestic fracture. Joe has a family at home that she is slowly losing, Cruz is trying to figure out who she is while pretending to be someone else entirely, and the missions themselves are staged with the kind of expensive, serious-minded production design that Paramount+ has been happy to fund. Nicole Kidman shows up as a Washington intelligence figure and acquits herself well, though the show's political maneuvering in those corridors is considerably less interesting than what happens on the ground. Lioness is at its best when it stays close to the operational reality of Cruz's infiltration work, where the danger is specific and the stakes feel personal rather than geopolitical.

Critics were generally warm, praising Saldaña and noting that the show was better than its logline suggested. Audience response was solid, and an IMDb rating in the high sevens reflects a viewership that finds it satisfying if not revelatory. The complaints that surface most often are fair ones: the pacing can be uneven, and the family-at-home scenes drag against the momentum of the field storylines.

There are other shows about the human cost of intelligence work, but few lean as hard as this one on the physical and psychological toll it takes on women specifically, not as a talking point but as the actual texture of the drama. Cruz's body is a site of genuine danger. That specificity is what keeps Lioness from feeling like a generic action-thriller with prestige trimmings.
