Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren playing a ranching couple in 1920s Montana sounds like stunt casting, and for the first few episodes it kind of is. Then something settles. Ford, largely absent from television his entire career, finds a weathered stillness that suits Jacob Dutton well, and Mirren plays Cara with a kind of coiled, dry-eyed ferocity that the show earns rather than assumes. The two of them together are the best reason to watch 1923, a prequel series set in the Yellowstone universe that follows the Dutton family through drought, Prohibition's collapse, and the early tremors of the Depression.

Taylor Sheridan writes the show with the same maximalist instincts that run through all his work: big landscapes, big violence, characters who speak in declarative sentences about land and legacy and death. That works better here than it sometimes does in Yellowstone proper, partly because the period setting gives the brutality a historical weight, and partly because the two leads are good enough to make the speechifying feel less like speechifying. A parallel storyline following Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) across Africa and Europe runs at a different pace entirely, almost like an adventure serial grafted onto a ranching saga. It does not always fit, and Alex, his British companion, exists mostly to be imperiled and rescued.

Critics were largely warm toward the first season, pointing to the lead performances and the production's visual ambition. Audiences came in enormous numbers, making it one of Paramount+'s biggest launches. The second season, which wrapped in early 2025, drew more mixed responses, with some feeling the sprawl had become harder to justify across a shorter episode count.

The show is best understood as a character study wearing Western genre clothes, and it works best in quiet scenes between Ford and Mirren, two people playing a marriage that has survived everything and expects to survive more.

The streamer leaned heavily on the Yellowstone universe to build its subscriber base, and 1923 was a significant part of that strategy. It performed well enough that Paramount+ was reportedly eager for more, but the creative shape of the story and Sheridan's own instincts about where it ended appear to have carried the day. An 8.3 on IMDb across 15 episodes suggests the audience that found it liked it, but this was always a story with a beginning and an end baked in.

The clearest way to understand why it stopped is simply that it finished. Unlike a cancellation, where a network runs out of patience or money, 1923 concluded because the story reached its conclusion. Whether Sheridan or Paramount+ might revisit this corner of the Dutton universe someday in some other form is an open question, but this particular show ended on its own terms.
