What is Joey about?

Joey is the show that proves Friends had a shelf life, and that shelf life ended before NBC decided to fill it. The show lasted two seasons on NBC before disappearing entirely, a fate that feels appropriate for a spinoff that misunderstood what made the original work. It aired at a time when the network was desperate to milk its biggest properties, and Joey is the result of that desperation. The show is not quite bad enough to become a cult object, and not interesting enough to warrant a second look from people who enjoyed Friends.

What makes Joey notable now is not anything it accomplished, but what it reveals about the limits of character extraction.
