What is JAG about?

JAG ran for ten seasons on CBS (after a rocky start on NBC) and averaged somewhere north of 15 million viewers in its prime, which makes its relatively modest cultural footprint now a little surprising. Donald P. Bellisario built it as a hybrid: part military procedural, part courtroom drama, part will-they-won't-they romance, with enough fighter jet sequences to keep the action crowd reasonably happy. The pitch essentially was Top Gun crossed with a law show, and for a very large audience in the late 1990s and early 2000s, that was more than enough.

David James Elliott plays Harm Rabb with the kind of square-jawed earnestness that either reads as reassuring or faintly ridiculous depending on your tolerance for that type. Catherine Bell as Mac is the more interesting presence, and the push-pull between the two characters is the show's real engine, even when the writers stretch it past the point of credibility across a decade of near-misses. The courtroom plots are uneven, ranging from genuinely tense cases with real military-ethics stakes to formulaic procedural filler, and the show never quite commits to being serious enough to satisfy legal drama fans or loose enough to be pure entertainment.

Critics never warmed to it much, but audiences did, consistently. It was a show that rewarded loyalty rather than quality, the kind of thing people watched every week not because it was brilliant but because it was reliably itself. The IMDb score of 6.7 is probably about right, maybe slightly harsh for fans and slightly generous for skeptics.

Its most lasting contribution is probably that it produced NCIS as a spinoff, which went on to dwarf it in every measurable way. Harm and Mac got their finale together, more or less, which after ten years felt like the least the show owed its audience.

JAG is a rare case of a show that genuinely ran its course. Ten seasons and 227 episodes is a long time for any drama, and by 2005 the show had told most of the stories it had to tell about Navy lawyers and military justice. The fact that it reached that milestone at all is worth noting, given that NBC actually cancelled it after its first season in 1995. CBS picked it up, and for years it was a reliable performer for the network, particularly with older, military-friendly audiences. That audience stayed loyal for a remarkably long run.

By the time the final season aired, the ratings were still respectable but the show had clearly aged. CBS had launched NCIS as a JAG spinoff in 2003, and that series quickly found a much larger audience. In a way, NCIS made JAG somewhat redundant. The newer show was fresher, had broader appeal, and was clearly the direction CBS wanted to take that corner of its schedule. JAG's core audience was aging along with the show, and the network had a shinier version of the same general world already up and running.

Creator Donald Bellisario had built JAG into something durable, but there are only so many courtroom and mission storylines you can cycle through before the formula exhausts itself. The finale gave the lead characters Harm and Mac a proper resolution to their long-running romantic storyline, which is exactly what a planned ending allows for. This was not a cancellation. The show simply reached a natural stopping point, and CBS and the producers let it land.
