If you want science fiction that treats the home as a place where the extraordinary erupts into the ordinary, this is a show that takes that premise seriously, at least in its first season.

The show's real distinction is how it straddles two tones without always managing both well. There's genuine tension in the early episodes when Berry's character Molly starts experiencing unexplained symptoms and memories, and the question of what happened during that solo mission creates real narrative momentum. But Extant also has to contend with Pierce Gagnon's young son character and the family drama that CBS clearly wanted as an anchor. The science fiction elements eventually overwhelm the domestic storyline, which means the show never quite settles into what it is.
