The show landed solidly with critics who appreciated its restraint, though some felt the ending didn't justify the slow burn. Audiences were divided in that particular way that happens when a mystery refuses to fully resolve. It premiered on Apple TV in 2020 and disappeared after one season, which Apple seemed fine with. In a landscape crowded with puzzle-box crime dramas that pride themselves on clever twists, Defending Jacob is slower and darker, more interested in how suspicion corrodes love than in outsmarting the audience.
