When Does Community Season 7 Come Out? Is It Renewed?

What is Community about?

Community started as a fairly conventional NBC sitcom about a disgraced lawyer forced to attend a community college, and then it became something else entirely. By the end of its first season, Dan Harmon had steered it toward a show that could do a full bottle episode as a bottle episode parody, or spend half its runtime doing a shot-for-shot homage to spaghetti westerns, or suddenly, without warning, become a documentary about a documentary. If you want a show that treats its audience as intelligent and finds the joke in the form itself, this is one of the best versions of that.

The tone is relentlessly self-aware, and that self-awareness is both the show's best quality and, at times, its most exhausting one. Abed, played by Danny Pudi, essentially narrates the show's genre logic from inside the show, which is either brilliant or irritating depending on how you feel about meta-humor at high volume. Joel McHale's Jeff Winger is a reliably good anchor, a man trying to be selfish in a place that keeps forcing him to care about people. The ensemble around him is genuinely warm, which stops the cleverness from curdling into smugness, at least most of the time.

Critics loved it, audiences were more complicated. The ratings were never strong enough to make NBC comfortable, and the show spent several seasons under threat of cancellation, eventually migrating to Yahoo Screen for a sixth season that felt both like a gift and a farewell. The IMDb score of 8.5 reflects a devoted audience rather than a broad one. The people who love this show tend to really love it.

The comparison that always comes up is 30 Rock, another NBC comedy that prioritized jokes over warmth and density over accessibility. Community is warmer than 30 Rock, and more interested in the mechanics of genre, but both shows reward the kind of viewer who will go back and catch things they missed. The difference is that Community built its mythology around a group of people you actually want to spend time with, and at its best, the paintball episodes, the pillow fort episode, the clip show that had never actually happened, it earns that warmth completely.

Why did Community end?

Community's run is one of the stranger survival stories in recent television history. NBC kept renewing it despite ratings that were, frankly, terrible by network standards. The show was a critical darling and had a passionate online fanbase, but it never found a mass audience, and NBC shuffled it around the schedule repeatedly, at one point pulling it mid-season. The joke the show kept making about itself, "six seasons and a movie," started as an absurdist fan rallying cry and somehow became an actual roadmap.

By the time Season 5 arrived, Dan Harmon had been fired and then rehired, Chevy Chase had left, and Donald Glover departed partway through. The cast was thinning and the circumstances around the show were messy enough that NBC eventually let it go after Season 5. Yahoo Screen, a streaming platform that was essentially trying to establish itself as a destination for cult content, picked it up for a sixth season. That season aired in 2015, and while it was a genuine attempt to close things out properly, Yahoo Screen shut down not long after, which meant the platform that saved the show essentially evaporated.

The sixth season feels like it was always meant to be the end, or at least a reasonable stopping point. Harmon and the remaining cast had already stretched the premise about as far as it could go, and with the ensemble diminished and no obvious home for a seventh season, the show simply concluded. The movie has been talked about for years since, and as of now it remains unmade, which is either a punchline or a promise depending on how optimistic you are.
