Bonanza ran for fourteen seasons and 431 episodes, which is itself the most honest explanation for why it stopped. By the early 1970s, the show had simply run its course. It was one of the longest-running westerns in television history, and very few series survive that long without the seams showing.

The departure of Pernell Roberts, who left after six seasons in 1965, was an early sign that the ensemble could not hold together indefinitely. Then Dan Blocker, who played fan-favorite Hoss Cartwright, died unexpectedly in May 1972, just before the fourteenth season aired. That loss was a genuine blow to the show's identity. NBC moved it to Tuesday nights that fall, a scheduling shift that hurt ratings badly after years of dominance on Sunday evenings. The audience that had made Bonanza a top-ten fixture for much of the 1960s simply did not follow it to the new slot.

By January 1973, NBC had seen enough of the declining numbers and cancelled the show rather than ordering another season.
