What is Blindspot about?

NBC launched Blindspot in fall 2015 with one of the more audacious network TV premises of that decade: a woman with no memory, covered head to toe in tattoos, each one a coded clue pointing to a crime. It sounds like something cooked up in a pitch room at 2am, and honestly that energy never fully goes away. But in its first season especially, the show makes good on the hook. Jaimie Alexander carries an enormous amount of weight as Jane Doe, performing a character who has to seem both dangerous and bewildered, and she mostly pulls it off.

The tone is slick, fast, and relentlessly procedural in a way that network action drama tends to be. Each episode burns through a tattoo, solves something, and opens two more questions. The serialized mythology underneath, involving conspiracies that grow to include intelligence agencies, shadowy organizations, and eventually plots of near-cartoonish global scale, is where the show starts to strain. By the later seasons it has accumulated so many twists and reversals that keeping track requires a level of investment the storytelling does not always earn. Sullivan Stapleton as Weller is the weakest link in the main cast. He is stoic where he should be complex, and the romantic tension between him and Jane lands with less weight than the show needs it to.

Critics in 2015 were cautiously enthusiastic, noting that Alexander was doing something more interesting than the material demanded. Audiences showed up in big numbers early, though ratings declined steadily across five seasons, as they tend to do with mythology-heavy network shows that run long. The IMDb score of 7.3 reflects something accurate: a show that is better than its silliest moments suggest, but not as good as its best ones promised.

What keeps Blindspot watchable even in its messier stretches is the supporting ensemble. Ashley Johnson's Patterson, the forensic analyst who gradually becomes one of the show's most emotional characters, is a genuine pleasure, and Ennis Esmer's Rich Dotcom, initially a one-off villain, eventually becomes something close to comic relief with actual heart. The show ends up being carried less by its central mystery and more by the odd warmth of this FBI team, which is perhaps not what anyone intended.

Blindspot ran for exactly 100 episodes across five seasons, which has the feel of a deliberate target. NBC and the producers almost certainly had that milestone in mind as they mapped out the endgame, and the show's fifth season was a shortened final run of 11 episodes that wrapped up the story rather than leaving things open. This was a conclusion by design, not a cancellation.

That said, the ratings picture made it easier to reach that conclusion cleanly. Blindspot debuted in 2015 to genuinely strong numbers for NBC, but the audience eroded steadily over subsequent seasons, as tends to happen with serialized puzzle-box shows once the central mystery loses its grip. By seasons four and five, it was drawing a fraction of its original viewership. NBC had little incentive to push for more, and the producers had little leverage to demand it.

The shortened final season also aired in summer 2020, partly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which kept it away from the regular fall schedule and further reduced its profile. Still, the show got to finish on its own terms, which is more than a lot of network dramas in its position can say. Five seasons and 100 episodes is a reasonable run for a serialized action drama that was always going to struggle to sustain its premise indefinitely.
