What is Blindspot about?

Blindspot arrives with one of network television's more genuinely arresting premieres: a woman emerging from a duffel bag in Times Square, naked, covered head to toe in tattoos, with no memory and an FBI agent's name on her back. That image is striking enough to pull you in, and for a while the show delivers on its promise. Each tattoo functions as a case-of-the-week prompt, and Jaimie Alexander is a real physical presence in the role, doing most of her own stunt work and selling the character's confusion and growing agency in ways the writing doesn't always deserve.

The tone sits somewhere between procedural and conspiracy thriller, leaning harder into the latter as the seasons progress. Creator Martin Gero is clearly more interested in the labyrinthine mythology than in the weekly crimes, which can make early episodes feel like setup for a puzzle box that keeps expanding beyond any reasonable boundary. The supporting cast helps. Ashley Johnson's Patterson is the show's secret weapon, a tech analyst given actual personality, and Ennis Esmer's recurring Rich Dotcom brings a loose, comic energy that the show desperately needs when its mythology gets too heavy.

Critics greeted the first season with cautious optimism and strong ratings, but consensus cooled as the show's conspiracy layers multiplied past coherence. Audience numbers declined across its five seasons, and NBC moved it to streaming for its final run. The 7.3 on IMDb reflects a fanbase that stayed invested in the characters even as the plot tested their patience, which is probably the right read.

It has a family resemblance to Alias, and that comparison is unavoidable. But Alias had a tighter emotional core early on, and Blindspot never quite finds an equivalent. What it does have is Jaimie Alexander anchoring scenes that would otherwise collapse under their own convolution, which is sometimes enough and sometimes not.

Why did Blindspot end?

Blindspot ran for exactly 100 episodes across five seasons, which has the feel of a deliberate target. NBC and the producers almost certainly had that milestone in mind as they mapped out the endgame, and the show's fifth season was a shortened final run of 11 episodes that wrapped up the story rather than leaving things open. This was a conclusion by design, not a cancellation.

That said, the ratings picture made it easier to reach that conclusion cleanly. Blindspot debuted in 2015 to genuinely strong numbers for NBC, but the audience eroded steadily over subsequent seasons, as tends to happen with serialized puzzle-box shows once the central mystery loses its grip. By seasons four and five, it was drawing a fraction of its original viewership. NBC had little incentive to push for more, and the producers had little leverage to demand it.

The shortened final season also aired in summer 2020, partly delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which kept it away from the regular fall schedule and further reduced its profile. Still, the show got to finish on its own terms, which is more than a lot of network dramas in its position can say. Five seasons and 100 episodes is a reasonable run for a serialized action drama that was always going to struggle to sustain its premise indefinitely.
