What is Bad Sisters about?

Bad Sisters is a show about murdering a man who deserves it, and somehow that's the least interesting thing about it. Sharon Horgan created and stars in this Irish dark comedy-drama about four sisters who, across the first season, scheme repeatedly and incompetently to kill their brother-in-law John Paul, while a parallel timeline shows the aftermath of his death and two insurance investigators trying to prove foul play. The structure is clever without being showy, and the writing earns its laughs without ever letting you forget that John Paul's abuse of their sister Grace is the real subject.

The tone is genuinely tricky to describe, which is part of what makes the show worth watching. It is funny, sometimes very funny, but it keeps the emotional stakes honest. The Garvey sisters feel like actual siblings, with specific histories and petty frictions, and the cast, particularly Eve Hewson as the youngest, Becka, and Sarah Greene as the fierce, patch-wearing Bibi, do more with small scenes than most shows manage in whole episodes. Horgan herself is more restrained than you might expect, playing the guilt-carrying older sister with real weight. What distinguishes it from other prestige crime shows is that it trusts the audience to hold comedy and grief at the same time without a wink.

Critics received the first season with genuine enthusiasm, not the polite kind. It earned multiple Emmy nominations, a real achievement for an Apple TV show that could have easily been overlooked, and audience word of mouth was strong. Season two, which arrived in late 2024, was a harder sell. Without John Paul, the show needed a new engine, and opinions divided on whether it found one.

The Ireland of Bad Sisters is specific and lived-in, and the show never lets its premise become an abstraction. Even in its wobblier second season, it keeps returning to what the sisters actually feel about each other, which turns out to be a more durable foundation than any murder plot.

The first season resolved that central storyline, and a second season was commissioned to extend the world rather than continue an open-ended serialized drama. Once that second season wrapped up the remaining threads, there was simply nowhere left to go that the creators wanted to go.

Apple TV+ greenlit a second run on the strength of the critical reception and the awards attention the show generated, but that kind of prestige drama lives or dies by the integrity of its ending. Horgan has been public about her investment in the show feeling complete rather than overstretched, and the Christmas Eve finale of season two had the shape of a deliberate conclusion. This was not a show that ran out of audience or got pulled mid-story. It told what it wanted to tell.

That Apple let it end on its own terms actually reflects reasonably well on how the platform operates with prestige acquisitions. They are not a traditional network chasing renewal after renewal for advertising revenue. A two-season limited run that earns awards nominations and critical goodwill fits their model. Bad Sisters leaves with its reputation intact, which is a better outcome than most shows get.
