The cast, anchored by Andrew Koji's controlled performance, treats the material seriously. Olivia Cheng, in particular, is excellent as Ah Toy, a woman who has learned to game the system from inside it.

Critics gave Warrior strong reviews, and it found a devoted audience, though never the viewership Cinemax might have wanted. Viewers who latched onto the show tend to praise its willingness to let storylines breathe and to let characters sit in moral ambiguity rather than resolve cleanly. It wrapped after three seasons before reaching the narrative's endpoint, which is frustrating for anyone who invested in the longer character arcs.

Warrior doesn't fit comfortably next to other period crime dramas because it's less interested in the romance of its setting than in the texture of how people with no real power grab at whatever leverage they can find.
