What is The Resort about?

The Resort is a mystery-comedy about a marriage in trouble and a thirty-year-old disappearance, and it works best when it stops trying to be clever about the connection. William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milioti play Noah and Emma Reed, a couple on the verge of divorce who arrive at a Mexican resort for an anniversary trip neither of them wants. Within hours, Emma becomes obsessed with a cold case involving a missing teenager, and Noah gets pulled along. What could have been a tired premise—bored Americans poking around in someone else's tragedy—actually has something to say about how couples use distraction as a substitute for real conversation.

The show's tone is genuinely strange. It moves between broad comedy (Nick Offerman as a resort manager living in denial about his daughter's increasingly chaotic life) and genuine tension, sometimes within the same scene. The mystery itself is messy and unglamorous, told through degraded video footage, confused witness accounts, and the kind of local bureaucracy that makes investigation difficult. There's a low-budget quality to how the show looks and moves that keeps it from feeling like a network production. It's willing to spend episode time on small character moments and weird rabbit holes that don't neatly resolve.

Audiences and critics were divided. Some found the show's blend of tones awkward, unsure whether it wanted to be a drama about marital dissolution or a screwball vacation story. Others appreciated the refusal to pick a lane entirely. The mystery, while intriguing, doesn't deliver the kind of satisfying conclusion that mystery enthusiasts expect.
