Anthony Mackie plays John Doe, an amnesiac drifter who agrees to shepherd a mysterious package across a ravaged America, paired with Stephanie Beatriz's Quiet, a capable car thief who communicates mostly through action and expression. The setup is thin, but it works as scaffolding for what the show actually wants to do: watch characters survive increasingly absurd encounters while hurtling down broken highways.
The tone walks a deliberate line between post-apocalyptic despair and comedy that doesn't take itself seriously. Sweet Tooth, a murderous clown with a chainsaw-topped ice cream truck, could have been insufferable, but the show commits to the bit. Will Arnett voices the character with such unhinged enthusiasm that scenes with him become the highlight rather than the cringe point. Mackie brings genuine comedic timing to John's endless motor-mouthing, which might annoy some viewers but gives the show a particular flavor.
