Predictive Logic Analysis

The Good Wife has concluded its run. Production records list the series as ended, meaning the story has been brought to a planned close rather than left open. Barring a revival, there is no Season 8 in development.

What is The Good Wife about?

Alicia Florrick is a woman who has spent fifteen years playing the supporting role in someone else's life, and The Good Wife is about what happens when that arrangement collapses publicly and humiliatingly. Her husband, the State's Attorney of Cook County, goes to prison for corruption and soliciting prostitutes. She goes back to work as a junior associate at a Chicago law firm, at forty, starting more or less from scratch. That premise sounds like a prestige soap opera dressed up in legal procedural clothing, and for a while it is. But the show keeps finding more interesting questions to ask than you expect it to.

What makes it distinctive is how seriously it takes professional competence. Alicia is genuinely good at her job, and watching her get better at it is satisfying in a way that has nothing to do with romance or scandal. The law firm itself, Lockhart Gardner, is populated with characters who are allowed to be smart and complicated, particularly Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart, who is arguably the show's most consistently well-written figure across all seven seasons. Alan Cumming's political fixer Eli Gold provides much of the show's dry wit. The tone is cooler than most network dramas, less invested in being liked, which cuts against the CBS brand in interesting ways.

Critics embraced it enthusiastically from the start, frequently citing it as one of the best dramas on broadcast television during its peak years, roughly seasons two through five. Audiences responded too, making it a genuine hit in an era when broadcast drama was increasingly treated as a lesser format. The later seasons drew more mixed reactions, as the show's plotting grew more convoluted and some character decisions felt like wheel-spinning rather than development.

Julianna Margulies plays Alicia with a deliberate opacity that some viewers find frustrating and others find fascinating. The show rewards the second interpretation, because Alicia's gradual willingness to act in her own self-interest, rather than everyone else's, is the real subject of the whole series.

The series is listed as ended

Why did The Good Wife end?

The Good Wife ran for seven seasons on CBS, which by most television standards is a full, healthy life for a drama. Creators Robert and Michelle King had built the show into one of the most critically respected procedurals on network television, but by the sixth and seventh seasons it was clear the story they wanted to tell was reaching its natural conclusion. The Kings had always maintained strong creative control over the series, and the decision to end it was largely theirs, made in collaboration with CBS rather than against its wishes.

The ratings had softened considerably from the show's peak years in the early 2010s, when it regularly drew audiences north of ten million viewers. By season seven that number had eroded, as it had for nearly every network drama facing the dual pressure of cord-cutting and streaming competition. The show was never in danger of being yanked mid-story, but the declining audience made wrapping things up a reasonable choice for everyone involved.

There was also the practical reality that Julianna Margulies had carried the show for seven demanding seasons, and there are only so many directions Alicia Florrick's story can go before the premise exhausts itself. The Kings wrote a definitive ending, one that was controversial among fans but was clearly intentional, a final image designed to provoke rather than satisfy. This was a show that ended on its own terms, which is rarer than it should be.
