What is Slow Horses about?

Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb as a man who has weaponized his own repulsiveness. He's flatulent, cruel, strategically dishonest, and almost certainly the smartest person in any room he's willing to shuffle into. That tension, between a figure who seems like a joke and operates as something closer to a chess grandmaster, is what keeps Slow Horses from being just another British spy procedural. The show is based on Mick Herron's novel series, and it has the rare quality of actually feeling like good literary adaptation: the prose intelligence survived the translation.

The tone sits somewhere that's hard to name. It's funny in a way that never tips into parody, grim in a way that never loses its dark humor. Slough House, the MI5 dumping ground where disgraced agents are sent to rot on pointless administrative work, is both a comic premise and a genuinely sad one. River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) provides the nominal heroic energy, but the show is wise enough to keep undercutting him. Kristin Scott Thomas, as the ambitious and morally flexible Diana Taverner, gets some of the best scenes in the series, playing someone who is always the second-most dangerous person in any negotiation.

Critical reception has been strong across all five seasons, which is itself a minor achievement. The IMDb score sits at 8.3, and the show has maintained that audience trust without the usual sophomore stumble. It's the kind of series that gets recommended in hushed tones by people who feel like they've found something real rather than discovered something hyped.

What makes it stick is that the losers actually lose things. Slough House isn't a quirky underdog office where screwups triumph through pluck. People get hurt, careers stay ruined, and Lamb dispenses something like justice while remaining entirely compromised himself. That's a harder thing to pull off than it looks.
