What is Onimusha about?

Onimusha is a Netflix anime that takes the video game franchise's demon-slaying samurai premise and runs it through a zombie apocalypse filter. The result is an action show built on the appeal of watching skilled fighters systematically dismantle hordes of undead, framed within the rigid social codes and sword techniques of feudal Japan. If you want elaborately choreographed battle sequences without much narrative complication, this delivers.

The show's tone is straightforward action-adventure. It does not mine its setting for genuine historical atmosphere or treat its premise with particular weight. There's a pleasingness to how it presents swordplay and monster design, and the Japanese voice cast is solid, particularly Akio Otsuka as the lead. What's distinctive is mainly its willingness to be uncomplicated: eight episodes, no sprawling character arcs, just a samurai brotherhood and their weapon against waves of enemies. It knows what it is and does not oversell itself.

Critical and audience response was muted. The show came and went without generating significant discussion, which often happens with anime adaptations that arrive on Netflix without strong cultural momentum behind them. It did not find a particularly devoted audience, nor did it attract much critical attention in either direction.
